Dear Colette,
I am starting a new sales position that requires full-time travel in my car. You mentioned during one of your presentations you’re a recovering control freak, so curious if you have any strategies to stay organized on the road and maximize my time.

Dear Numb Bum,
That’s a pretty hysterical nickname you’ve given yourself! When you’re traveling on the road set yourself up for success to become more efficient and make the time more enjoyable. First off, look at your car as a university and listen to as many podcasts or books on tape (use the Libby app for free audible books) that keep you focused and motivated. Second, here’s a list of some helpful tips and items that can streamline your road time:
- Take advantage of technology and use any device that allows you to keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road (chargers, earbuds, etc.)
- Thank you notes with stamps for downtime (you can get them in the mail immediately to impress with next-day delivery)
- Spare neutral-colored blouse or t-shirt
- Dishcloth on your lap when eating or drinking in the car
- Tide to go stick
- Office supply baggies for travel – think mini stapler, paperclips, highlighter, tape, sticky notes
- Log mileage in an appropriate book. Each morning hit the trip counter and at the end of the day log mileage before getting out of the car
- Keep gym clothes in the car and an old pair of sneakers to walk. More likely to make happen if you’re prepared
- Get gas at the end of the day rather than wait until the next morning
- Always confirm appointments the day before and plan your drive to maximize your time with clients
- Band-Aid box or Blister Stick in the glovebox
- Trunk – cargo organizer for supplies and samples
- Mini cooler/snacks/water – which will support your efforts to avoid a drive-thru
- Toiletries – hand wipes, mints, hand sanitizer, spare toothbrush and toothpaste
- Make a client meeting kit – one notebook, business cards, presentation materials
- Remember- An hour of planning can often save you hours of frenzy
- Set out your clothes at the beginning of the week or the night before
- Have a place where you always put receipts and/or immediately scan to the appropriate folder
- Clean out your car daily. It’ll take 2 minutes compared to 20.
- Keep your cool. Traffic back-ups are going to happen, but with the right attitude and supplies, you’ll be able to keep your perspective and stress less.
Great question, thanks for asking! Happy driving! Colette
