Let me state upfront, Wonder Woman is a superheroine, not a human, so this article is NOT about urging you to juggle additional responsibilities, nor have a 17-inch waistline. Rather, I’d like to highlight a few truths we can learn from the comic book icon created during World War II. Yes, we can discover something relevant even from an Amazon warrior princess from Paradise Island who sports red boots.
For more than 70 years, Wonder Woman has fought tirelessly for truth and justice. Her weapon of choice? The Lasso of Truth. For those unfamiliar with the golden lasso, anyone caught in it is compelled to speak the truth. Wouldn’t it be interesting to wrap that thing around some of our world’s political leaders? Or how about one of your co-workers? Or you? What truth do you need to tell to make your life more Wonder-ful?
This strong, female hero has always been willing to stand up for herself, literally. The Wonder Woman power pose – legs wide, fists on hips – has been proven scientifically to boost self-confidence by increasing testosterone and decreasing cortisol. I encourage you to try this effective hormone manipulation next time you’re faced with speaking up for yourself. Take two minutes in a private place (bathroom stalls work great), strike the Wonder Woman pose, and notice how much easier it is to face your fears.
Wonder Woman also possesses other abilities that we can adapt to our own situations. For instance, via the ruby in her tiara, she is able to connect with colleagues and loved ones back home. No, I’m not suggesting you sharpen your telepathy skills, but do consider who’s there to support you when you have tough decisions to make. Who’s on your island? Have you cultivated a mentor, sponsor, friend, or coach who can help you meet your goals? Even Wonder Woman knows she can’t go it alone. Those connections sustain and support us.
And speaking of her tiara, Wonder Woman sometimes uses it as a throwing weapon that returns to her like a boomerang. No, I’m not suggesting you chuck something at some annoying person, but to become aware of your everyday choices, words and deeds that boomerang back to you. We all know that for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. What are you sending out?
You’d be a Wonder Woman in my eyes (guys, have fun with this one!) if you discovered your inner strength and spoke your truth to remain strong and healthy. Feel free to skip the bustier bathing suit and big gold belt. I will.
